fischer fastens the world's largest and tallest observation wheel in Dubai

Fixing technology from the Black Forest secures new landmark in the Middle East

The wheel may not have been reinvented in Dubai, but it is much larger and taller than any other. The observation wheel Ain Dubai sets a world record and is a new remarkable landmark in the Middle East. fischer fixings and system solutions provide stability to the observation wheel on Bluewaters, the sophisticated, must-visit island destination.
After dredging several thousand tonnes of sand and erecting multiple new apartments and hotels, the artificial island Bluewaters in the United Arab Emirates was prepared for a project of epic proportions. And so, Ain Dubai will welcome its first customers in October 2021.

Up to 1,750 passengers at once can enjoy breathtaking views from the observation wheel across the coast to Dubai Marina. The new Middle Eastern landmark is both an attractive place for visitors and a “must-visit” venue for views, sunsets, entertainment and customized celebrations. Once they are at the highest point, visitors will reach a height of over 250 meters. To put this into perspective: The London Eye tourist attraction is only 135 meters tall. Landmarks such as the Burj Al Arab, the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah can be admired during the trip in luxurious special event air-conditioned cabins with one rotation taking approximately 38 minutes.

The project was developed by Dubai Holding, a diversified global investment company with operations in 13 countries and employing over 20,000 people across 10 key sectors: Real Estate, Hospitality, Leisure & Entertainment, Media, ICT, Design, Education, Retail, Manufacturing & Logistics and Science. “We were able to convince our client with our professional engineering services in areas such as planning, prototyping and product training”, says Yazan Almasri, facade manager at the fischer subsidiary in the United Arab Emirates. “But our secure and economical solutions, as well as the global trust in our brand, were decisive for being awarded the contract”.

Various facade and installation systems and heavy-duty fixings by the fischer Group of Companies were used to erect the base of the Ferris wheel. fischer’s fixings and system solutions firmly connect the base plate with the steel profiles. The fischer universal mortar FIS V firmly anchored the components into the substrate together with the suitable system components in the hollow core slabs. When inserting the anchor rod, the fischer anchor sleeve ensures that the mortar is distributed precisely where it is required, thereby ensuring an optimum fit in the chambers of the construction material. The fischer bolt anchor FAZ II was also used in concrete during the installation of the steel construction of the ‘observation wheel substructure’.

The modular fischer universal channel system FUS was used to fasten the load-bearing structure. With its clever push-through connections, the channels allow corresponding system parts to be installed quickly and easily, such as the FCN Clix M connector for the installation of the pipe clamps with fischer threaded rods and u-washers. Further system components included the universal UWS mounting bracket. The WK 100 angle bracket was used to connect the FUS channel to the substrate using screws and the FCN Clix P connector while additionally fastening and stabilizing the load-bearing structure. fischer facade systems were also used to install cement boards to the fischer secondary construction.

“With a global partner such as our fischer Group of Companies, all those involved in construction can always rely on fast technical support, regardless of their location”, emphasizes Tinu Thomas, Technical Manager at the fischer subsidiary in the United Arab Emirates. “We did not limit ourselves to selling products and systems. Instead, we offer our clients a comprehensive service. Every project is accompanied by a team of professionals that supports clients and partners from the start of a project throughout every construction phase until its successful completion”.

The services provided by the fixings specialist include consultations and selecting suitable system and fixings solutions as well as all-encompassing support with design, complying with agreements, on-site installation and project assessment in order to guarantee a high level of quality within the given deadline.
